Upcycling a Singapore Airlines 3-seater with Rubio Monocoat
Upcycling, it’s stylish, ecological and gives unique results. So naturally, it’s a trend that we love! Roger & Sons clearly feels the same way about it, because they set up a unique cooperation with Singapore Airlines. They upcycled original 3-seaters and galley carts from the airline and protected them with Oil Plus 2C.
Retired & repurposed
Just because some Airbus A380 planes were retired, doesn’t mean that it’s the end of their story. Six 3-seaters and a few galley carts were repurposed into a unique project by Roger & Sons. In an exclusive collaboration with Singapore Airlines, they recreated the pieces of furniture with repurposed local wood from The Local Tree Project. This project rehabilitates abandoned logs that are felled in Singapore, making this a twice recycled project!
Rubio Monocoat’s Oil Plus 2C was used to protect the furniture, to make sure it stands the test of time and gets to live a long second life.
Tip of the month: how to upcycle your wooden project
Do you have an upcycling project of your own that you want to treat with our Rubio Monocoat oil? Then it’s important to sand down the wood so that the wood fibres can molecularly bond with the oil.
The first step in this process is making sure you can actually sand the wood down enough. Is the wooden layer thick enough to be sanded? Is it for example solid wood or are you dealing with wood veneer? In the latter case, it might not always be possible to sand well enough and you run the risk of sanding too much.
Is the wood suitable for sanding? Then the easiest way to sand is by starting with a coarser screening net, for example 40 to 60. That way you can efficiently sand away the biggest part of the previous treatments. When you see that you’ve sanded away enough, you can switch to higher screening nets. With every higher screening net, you will be able to sand away the scratches that you made earlier. Working with screening net 80 will get you a nice result already, but the best screening net to finish with is 100 to 120.

With 400 000 works in its collection, the National Museum of Art in Oslo is Norway’s largest collection of art, architecture and design. But not just world-famous paintings such as “The Scream” by Edvard Munch are worth admiring in the museum. After all, the floors treated with Rubio Monocoat are also worth a look!
13 000 m² wooden floors
The National Museum was established in 2003 in Oslo and opened a new building in 2022. This phenomenal new building is situated near the harbor and is adjacent to the Nobel Peace Centre. To make it even more impressive, it is even bigger than the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Guggenheim in Bilbao. Among its world-famous art, the museum displays the painting “The Scream” by Edvard Munch.
Taking all this into account, it was quite an honour to be chosen to protect the wooden floors in the museum. Rubio Monocoat’s Oil Plus 2C was used to treat the no less than 13 000 m² floors. Most of the floors got the colour Natural (9 000 m²), and about 4 000 m² was protected with the colour Pure. Cleaning is done with Universal Soap.
Tip of the month: treating large floors
The floors in the museum are spacious exhibition areas. When treating large surfaces such as these, it is best to work in zones of 5 - 10 m². Make sure that you treat the edges first. Floors this big also require several containers of Oil Plus 2C. Be sure to mix the different containers and stir them well so you get an even result everywhere.

From Belgium to Australia, Rubio Monocoat is everywhere. The picturesque Canadian Bay in Australia’s Mount Eliza is a beautiful place to live. What makes living there even more beautiful, is a solid protection of your wood with Rubio Monocoat oils.
Coastal views with a strong Rubio Monocoat protection
The impressive exterior design of this beautiful seaside villa immediately catches the eye, while at the same time it blends in very well with the landscape. To integrate the amazing coastal views into the villa, they worked with a lot of windows and several terraces. This makes the house ideal to enjoy the outdoor life to the fullest.
To stay in tune with the outdoors both inside and outside, the natural touch was integrated in the house by using a lot of wood. French Oak was used for the interior and Blackbutt Wood and Charred Cypress for the exterior parts. To protect the wood properly, they chose to work with the Rubio Monocoat oils. They used Oil Plus 2C for the interior wood. The colour Ash Grey perfectly accompanies the interior design. For outside, they chose the Hybrid Wood Protector in the colours Natural and Black.
Tip of the month: using the right colour for exterior surfaces
If you want to prevent outdoor wood from greying, it is important to choose a pigmented colour. After all, it is the pigments inside the oil that provide the UV protection. Therefore, it is not always recommended to choose “Pure”. Instead, you can choose a colour that is very close to, or even darker than, the original colour of the wood that you want to treat.

]]>Nick James Design from the UK is a furniture maker with a heart for the environment. His traditional wood workshop is therefore completely carbon neutral. To finish his furniture in an ecological way, he uses Rubio Monocoat products.
Climate efforts
Nick James values nature and is therefore committed to 100% carbon neutral furniture. He does this by reinvesting part of his profits in forest maintenance and by planting a tree for every piece of furniture his team makes. Moreover, he has also bought his own piece of woodland where he plants new trees and where he cultivates his own wood.
It goes without saying that Nick also considers his ecological vision when it comes to the finishing products for his wooden furniture. He deliberately chooses Oil Plus 2C because of its 0% VOC, easy application, endless creative possibilities, food safety and, of course, our eco-friendly approach. Although the chosen colour depends on the project, Nick often chooses the colour Pure to finish his wood.
Tip of the month: working with an absorbent type of wood
Are you working with walnut and do you want to treat your wood project with Oil Plus 2C? Then it is good to know that walnut is a very absorbent type of wood and therefore takes up more oil. It is therefore recommended to give the oil sufficient time to soak in. Whereas it is otherwise best to wait a few minutes to wipe away the oil, with walnut it is better to let the oil soak in for 15 minutes. If, after those 15 minutes, you see that the surface looks dry or that you have a colour difference, you have probably used too little oil for this type of wood. To optimally protect the wood and get a uniform result, it is best to apply some more oil.

]]>Colour sampling especially when working on a clients project is very important, if the colour sample is not representative of the final colour it can lead to frustration and ultimately unnecessary work.
When making colour samples, it doesn’t matter if you are dealing with a wooden floor or a wooden table; the approach will be similar.
SELECTING WOOD FOR A COLOUR SAMPLE
The wood selected for colour sampling needs to represent the wood that is going to be used in your project. The best way to do this is to use wood from the same batch(es) you will be using for the final project, but if this is not possible, use wood that closely matches your project.
Wood is a naturally growing material, and variations in colour within one specifies are typical and to be expected. Variation in wood colour will determine how the final colour will look when you have applied Oil Plus 2C.
For example, if there is no or minimal sapwood present in a wood floor and the color sample is performed on a primarily sapwood board, you will more than likely not get the project to match with the approved colour sample satisfactorily.
Check out the below image where a light color White Oak and a darker White Oak board are sampled with Oil Plus 2C colors Smoke 5% and Smoke.
Oil Plus 2C "Smoke" & "Smoke 5%" shown on different White Oak boards
Wood species used in a project may exhibit up to 3 colour variations within that species.
Unless the project is completed with selected wood close in colour, try to have at least 2-3 colour variations in the wood chosen for the colour sample board.
PREPARING THE SAMPLE SURFACE
Sanding
When preparing wood for colour samples, it is essential to mimic the sanding process that will be performed on the actual project, regardless if it is a wood floor or a wood table.
Sanding affects how open the grain of the wood is, and as a result, differences in sanding will allow for more or less product penetration. If using a pigmented colour, more product penetration results in more pigment, which in turn affects the final colour.
The recommended final sanding grit for Oil Plus 2C is 120.
Typically, sanding a wood floor is done with a big aggressive belt sander (using 2-3 different abrasive grits, starting coarse and using progressively finer grits) followed by a finish sanding procedure whereas a tabletop may get sanded with only random orbit sanders.
Again, when making colour samples, it is critical to mimic the exact sanding process that will be done when sanding the finish surface.
Sample preservation
Many hardwood flooring contractors sand the floor and do their colour samples directly on the floor. While this is a very good option, the approved colour sample will get sanded away. Now that proof is gone forever, and it cannot be used as a reference against the final finish colour.
Applying the sample colour
When applying a Rubio Monocoat oil like Oil Plus 2C on a colour sample board, it is essential to mimic the actual oil application process. This is more important when dealing with wood flooring vs. dealing with furniture.
Note
Oil Plus 2C comes in a 20ml and 100ml sample size which only contain Part A only as Part B is an accelerant and hardener which does not affect colour.
FLOORING
In the case of hardwood floors, it is typical to use equipment like a heavy electric floor buffer to work the oil into the wood surface and follow with that same tool to towel-buff off the excess oil from the surface. This mechanical application process is not easily replicated by just applying the oil by hand wiping. So, mimic the actual floor application process with a simulated process when creating colour samples. The use of an electric sander or small automotive buffer outfitted with red/white pads and rags may be more effective than just wiping the oil by hand when creating a colour sample panel.
Note
Compared to finishing by hand, heavy electric floor buffers typically leave the oiled wood surface feeling slightly smoother and with a slightly lighter colour.
FURNITURE
With wood furniture, you often don't use such heavy and powerful floor finishing equipment. Instead, oiling and buffing is completed mostly by hand. In that situation, hand finishing is just fine for creating a colour sample.

Synagogue Shomre Hadas or Dutch Synagogue was built in 1893 and was the first large synagogue in Antwerp (Belgium). Due to stability works, the original parquet had to be replaced. The new parquet was protected with a layer of Oil Plus 2C.
The parquet in the synagogue had to be broken out as stability works had been carried out. The bema was the only place where the original parquet could be retained. Parquet specialist Luc De Pauw started from a new screed with mosaic sub-parquet on top and adjusted the size of the new herringbone accordingly. The herringbone in prime quality was supplied by Kerkhofs from Peer.
In total, this project involved as much as 400 m² of oak herringbone. To protect and colour this surface in one coat, they chose Oil Plus 2C in the colour Oak.
The colour samples were prepared by Rubio Monocoat's lab and then applied directly to the newly installed floor. This way, you avoid any colour difference between a loose sample and the actual colour on the floor. Such a colour difference can occur due to the wood itself or external factors such as lighting.

Your outdoor wood has to endure a lot. Quality protection therefore is essential. Of course, the protection should also be beautiful, especially on such a gorgeous project as Island Rest. Mission accomplished with the Hybrid Wood Protector, we think!
Island Rest is located on the British Isle of Wight. This island is known as a holiday destination thanks to its milder climate. Despite the favourable weather conditions, it is important to properly protect your wood even here. Softwood such as Douglas fir or larch may be commonly used for outdoors, but the right protection will make your wood last much longer.
The owners of the holiday home Island Rest wanted an oasis where they could unwind with their family. So they specifically went looking for a wood protection that does not require a lot of maintenance. After all, the last thing they wanted was to go on holiday and have to maintain everything straight away. Their choice fell on Rubio Monocoat's low-maintenance Hybrid Wood Protector.
Are you applying our wood oil to a vertical surface? Then it is best to maintain the wood after a year with Exterior Wood Cleaner and a new coat of Hybrid Wood Protector. Then you can continue for 3 to 5 years until your next maintenance. An interim maintenance is of course still possible with Exterior Soap.

Wood deserves to be well protected, especially when it comes to a beautiful musical instrument. This beautiful guitar from Canada was given a protective layer of Oil Plus 2C so that it can be played for years to come.
Musicians are creative people. So a guitar can definitely be artistically made as well. This guitar by Meinzinger Guitars has a creative touch thanks to the different types of wood that were used. For the design of the guitar Darryl Meinzinger integrated the woods of Madrone Burl, Sapele, Black Walnut, Dark Roasted Maple, Macassar Ebony, Wenge and Purpleheart. This original mix deserves the best protection and Rubio Monocoat is happy to help with that. With the Oil Plus 2C Pure the guitar gets a long-lasting protection and the extra shine was obtained with the Universal Maintenance Oil Pure.
Do you also have a wood project where you use many different types of wood? Then it is useful to know that our indoor wood oil is suitable for virtually all wood species. So you can easily protect your entire project in one go with Oil Plus 2C. For the colour we recommend the Pure, just as Darryl did here. This colour from our range is the closest to a transparent protection. This way you can fully enjoy the natural look of the wood and get as uniform a protection as possible.

Ter Borcht Castle in Meulebeke has existed for centuries, so it was high time to renovate the building. The oak and larch floors were treated with Oil Plus 2C in the colours Pure and White 5%.
The castle dates from the 17th century and has been occupied by hostile troops several times over the years. A renovation was therefore no luxury. The municipality bought the castle in 1965 and had it renovated to accommodate a catering establishment, meeting room, offices and a reception area. To prepare the castle for the numerous visitors, the floors were treated with Oil Plus 2C.
For the restoration of the existing floors, it was necessary to disassemble the parquet. The oak panel parquet was then reinstalled, sanded and finished with our Oil Plus 2C Pure. In the case of the oak Hungarian point, the ground had to be strengthened and levelled first, after which the parquet was put back in place. The floor was then treated with oil in the Pure colour, which will make maintenance much easier.
The Siberian larch plank floor was newly installed. The aim was to achieve as natural a result as possible. In this case, it is better to use a colour with white pigmentation for larch wood. The choice for the colour was therefore quickly made for White 5%.
Are you also planning to renovate and treat your floor with Rubio Monocoat? Then it is very important to completely remove all previous treatments before applying the oil. This allows the Oil Plus 2C to bind molecularly with the cellulose fibres of the wood. When treating large surfaces such as floors, it is also best to work in zones of 5 - 10 m². Make sure that you treat the edges first.
Are you also working with larch wood? Then it can be a challenge to get your floor completely scratch-free since larch is a rather soft wood type. If you apply WoodPrep to your larch wood after sanding, this problem can be solved.

The Hungarian State Opera House was built in 1884 and was in urgent need of renovation in 2016. The Swedish floor in the impressive Auditorium was treated with Oil Plus 2C, giving it a quality protection. In addition, the original colour was reinstated.
Since its construction in 1884, Budapest's stately opera house has had two major renovations: in 1912 and in the early 1980s. Over the years, some minor works were also carried out, but by the end of 2016 it was time for a major restoration. The works lasted until March 2022 and provided better acoustics, more modern electrical systems (including a fire alarm), changing rooms and rehearsal rooms for musicians, ... The Swedish floor in the Auditorium was also thoroughly renovated.
The oak elements in the Auditorium were treated with Oil Plus 2C. This way, the Swedish floors, tongue-and-groove wooden floors and inlaid elements get an optimal protection that will stand the test of time. To maintain the floor, they will clean the wood with our Universal Soap. If the surface needs an upgrade later, our Universal Maintenance Oil will be used.

At Caspero Design, our Hybrid Wood Protector is literally put on the grill. Or next to it, anyway. Their teppanyaki bars are made from Afzelia tropical hardwood, which is protected with Hybrid Wood Protector. Whether they pass the test? Definitely!
Caspero Design specialises in welding and customisation. They also produce all kinds of handmade garden tables and barbecues. For these, they use a combination of steel and wood. To protect their product, they treat the Afzelia tropical hardwood with our ecological outdoor oil Hybrid Wood Protector. To obtain the most beautiful result, they choose to work with the colours Look Ipé, Teak and Pure.
Extra steps for a better and longer protection of the Afzelia wood can be taken during the preparation, protection and maintenance processes. Tropical hardwood should always be prepared with Exterior Wood Cleaner. Greasy types of wood contain a lot of substances that can bleed out. To avoid this, a preparation with our Exterior Wood Cleaner is ideal.
Furthermore, it is also a good move to add 10% B Component to the Hybrid Wood Protector oil. This will improve the drying time, as the many substances in this type of wood would otherwise slow down the drying process. Finally, it is important to regularly clean and nourish your garden furniture with our Exterior Soap Ecospray.

The interior joinery was handled by Sergeant OAK. This name is an old acquaintance of Rubio Monocoat, as Sergeant OAK also helped to furnish Rubio Monocoat Belgium's showroom! The oak veneer bar was finished with Oil Plus 2C in the colour White 5%. In the before and after pictures you can admire the beautiful result. For the stairs and walls, an extra intense colour was chosen by combining Precolor Easy Intense Black with our Oil Plus 2C Black.
At an event location such as this, a bar is obviously essential. It goes without saying that this bar comes into contact with many liquids. Oil Plus 2C in itself already provides sufficient protection against these liquids, but we have a few extra aids to avoid stains from water, soft drinks, alcohol, etc.
A first recommendation is our preparatory product Tannin Primer. For tannin-rich wood such as oak or chestnut, we recommend using the Tannin Primer instead of our Cleaner to prepare the wood. This way, you avoid the black tannin or tannic acid stains that typically occur on wood that comes into contact with a lot of water.
In public areas with intensive use, we also recommend using our Universal Maintenance Oil. Especially because this bar is used so much, the extra liquid resistance that this product brings will certainly be welcome.

A learning tower is convenient for every family. This way children can learn from their parents independently by simply climbing onto the safe stool and watching along. Anna from Barcelona devised a version of the learning tower which allows it to be transformed into a chalkboard, chair, table, etc. She wanted to protect her creations with a childproof wood treatment. Considering the Food Contact Compliance and Toy Safety certificates, Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C was the logical choice!
How it started
Anna and her husband have always been drawn to wood, and in 2017 they started working with it themselves. They taught themselves the craft and started their own furniture business, Liken Wood. When their daughter Ona was born in 2020, they wanted to include her in their love of wood. Anna started designing specific furniture for her daughter and came up with her convenient learning tower, the Cyathea.
The learning tower: child-friendly, ecological & convenient
Everything about the learning tower is child-friendly. There are no sharp corners, only rounded edges. The tower does not contain any screws and is only made from wooden parts. There is an anti-slip protection and an adjustable safety bar. Even the finishing product Oil Plus 2C is safe for children. In fact, the oil is Food Contact Compliant and Toy Safe!
In addition, the Cyathea is also ecological. After all, only FSC certified wood is used. This wood comes from forests with responsible and sustainable management. The protective product is once again important here. Rubio Monocoat's wood oil contains 0% VOC, has a very low consumption and is produced as ecologically as possible.
The learning tower can be transformed into a table for drawing or doing crafts and a handy ladder for brushing teeth in the bathroom or eating a snack at the sink, for example. The safety bar can be personalised with the child's name and can be removed once they are older to make climbing easier. The tower is very easy to assemble and comes in different colours. You can choose between Natural, Super White or Oak.
Anna also sells the Cyathea learning tower in an untreated version. This way you can choose which one suits your child or your interior best. The great thing about the Oil Plus 2C is that Rubio Monocoat, as King of Colours, offers more than 40 colours. So there is bound to be one that perfectly matches your child's wishes! But which colour is the most stimulating?
For playgrounds or toys, it is generally accepted that it is best to choose bright colours. After all, they stimulate many things, such as the creativity, emotions and subconscious of your child. Some nice colours of Oil Plus 2C that fit with this are Ruby Red and Pomegranate Pink. Would you like to give your creativity free rein? Then you can also choose to treat the tower in several colours. If you choose a bright basic colour, a neutral colour is ideal as a combination! That way the bright colours stand out better. Ideas here are the calm colours Teal Blue or Midnight Indigo or neutral colours Smoke and Mist.

The showroom of Pan Parket is one that invites thanks to the lounge bar, pool table and tasteful interior. Of course, the natural wood look with Rubio Monocoat products also has something to do with it. To keep the wood as natural as possible, the colours White 5% and Pure of the product Oil Plus 2C were chosen.
The Croatian company Pan Parket wanted a new, impressive showroom where quality is key. The showroom contains handcrafted furniture made from Slavonian oak, and in the cosy lounge bar customers can relax after work and of course enjoy the nice environment. As Pan Parket wants to express and represent quality, they chose our quality brand to protect the wood. Thanks to the successful ten-year collaboration with Rubio Monocoat, Pan Parket needed no further convincing, and the wood was protected with Oil Plus 2C.
Choosing the right colour for your wood protection can be a difficult process. Some popular Oil Plus 2C colours are Pure, White 5% and Natural. However, not all three colours will keep your wood equally natural. The colour Pure contains no pigment, but is therefore not transparent. After all, the oil is made from linseed and therefore also contains a natural colour that will enrich/darken the wood.
Do you want to avoid this enriching effect and stay closer to the natural colour of the wood? Then a colour with pigment will come closer to the desired result. The colour Natural contains a creamy whitish/yellowish pigment that counteracts the natural darkening of white oak. The colour White 5% will also give a more natural result.
Be careful with other types of wood. Not every colour will give the same result with every wood type. For red oak, for example, it is better to use Precolor Easy Mint White to neutralise the pink/red tones in combination with Oil Plus 2C White 5%. As walnut is a dark wood in itself, the Pure colour will give the desired result. You will get a slight darkening, but this is often a desired effect.

All the doors, window shades, balusters, hand rails, … in the Çamlıca mosque were made according to the centuries-old tradition Kündekari. This technique was developed in Aleppo, Egypt and Anatolia during the Seljuk period (around the 11th century). It is an ancient Turkish woodworking art for which you are not allowed to use any nails, screws or any kind of adhesive whatsoever. The word Kündekari has its origin in Ottoman Turkish and it means ‘holding and understanding’. After all, the decorative technique requires that small geometrical pieces of wood, such as a pentagon, octagon or star, are simply interlocked. The advantage of this technique is that you prevent moisture and heat change, so that the wood will not warp or bend over time.
At Rubio Monocoat Turkey they were ready to provide the best protection for this wood project. All the wood in the mosque was treated with our interior oil Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C. Thanks to our revolutionary technique of molecular binding, the ancient technique of Kündekari gets the right protection. For the doors and windows they chose the colour Pure, the railings got a protective layer with a mix of Bourbon and Black.
Want to try out this wood art for yourself? Then it’s important to know which wood types are most often used for this technique. Oak, walnut, ebony and rose trees are mostly used for Kündekari. Are you working on an exterior project? Then oak, ash and iroko trees are most suited to withstand harsh weather conditions. Walnut, cherry, boxwood and pear trees are generally used for indoors. In addition, a planer can help you make the pieces of wood fit better.
